39th CIESM Congress in Venice 10-14 May 2010

Dear colleagues,

You are probably aware that the next CIESM (the Mediterranean Science Commission) congress (http://www.ciesm.org/marine/congresses/index.htm) is to take place in Venice next May (10-14 May 2010), and the submission of papers is open until 15 November 2009.

This
time, within each one of the scientific committees, specific subjects
have been proposed to stimulate contributions. These will be given
preference when selecting oral presentations.

In six CIESM committees (C), the selected subjects are:

C1 – Marine Geosciences:
•Turbidites,
catastrophic events, geohazards; •Mud/gas expulsion structures;
•Interfaces (oxic/anoxic); •Messinian salinity crisis;
•Estuaries/subterranean estuaries; •High resolution mapping, new
technological tools; •Archaeological items.

C2 – Physics and Climate of the Ocean:
•Small scale processes (turbulence, etc.); •New techniques for satellite data analyses; •Inter-basins
connections; •Large scale phenomena (teleconnections);
•Physical/biological coupling at meso-scale; •Integrated system of
(Med) observatories.

C3 – Marine Biogeochemistry:
•Contaminants
(methodological advances/new approaches); •Ocean acidification;
•Vertical fluxes of metals and organic compounds; •Mediterranean
precipitation regime.

C4 – Marine Microbiology:
•From
viruses to microzooplankton – synoptic views; •New microbiogical
approaches /techniques; •Functional microbial diversity; •Microbial
exchanges with Black Sea and Atlantic Ocean ; •Marine biotechnologies.

C5 – Living Resources & Marine Ecosystems:
•Indo-Pacific
Aliens; •Marine reserves and biodiversity; •Deep sea biodiversity;
•Ecology of marine mammals, turtles and sea birds; •Coastal vs.
offshore ecology; •Ecological impact of extreme events; •New species to
science, threatened species; •From fish to jelly seas;
•Bio-constructions; •Fishing down food webs vs high trophic aquaculture.

C6 – Coastal Systems:
•Shoreline
evolution: natural and anthropogenic changes; •Success stories in
restoration of coastal marine ecosystems; •Impacts of coastal
biodiversity loss on coastal economies; •Impacts of global warming on
Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.



I
strongly encourage you, and your collaborators, to submit contributions
on these subjects and make them present in the important forum of the
tri-annual CIESM congress, where the whole Mediterranean sea science community is gathering.
